Volkswagen turns a car into goalposts in fitting tribute to Gol range
Volkswagen has commemorated the 70th anniversary of its best-selling Brazilian brand by transforming the vehicle into goalposts.
The final Gol car to roll off the production line has been immortalized at the club where Pele leaped onto the world stage.
Since its launch in 1980, more than 8.5m of the cars were produced, making it a familiar sight on Brazilian streets but the model has now been discontinued in favor of the Polo Tack.
Keen to give its veteran workhorse a fitting send-off, Volkswagen carefully disassembled its final edition, melting key components in a furnace to be reforged as the goalposts at the Vila Belmiro stadium.

Incorporating a QR code that links to a farewell video for the car, including star Portuguese players, the initiative was developed by AlmapBBDO as part of a series of send offs including a match against the new Polo Track.
Livia Kinoshita, executive director of marketing and communications for Volkswagen Brasil, commented: “The Volkswagen Gol is an icon that inaugurated a new era in the Brazilian auto industry. Just like football, the Gol is a national passion, it has found a place in Brazilians’ hearts and it deserved a farewell that did justice to its stature.”
The Gol follows in a proud Volkswagen tradition of naming car models after sports, joining the likes of the Polo, Golf and Derby.
